The research groups of Dr. Schwab and Dr. Presse in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering in the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking to hire a highly motivated, full-time mass spectrometry-based research technologist.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Research will include studies on the analysis of emerging organic contaminants including perfluorinated chemicals, pharmaceuticals and pesticides in aqueous environmental samples and urine using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.
Under the general supervision of faculty investigators, the applicant will be responsible for performing chemical analysis focusing on emerging organic contaminants in aqueous matrices such as wastewater, drinking water and urine. The work includes the use of established procedures and protocols and the development of new analytical methods for various aqueous matrices.
Research will further include studies on improved drinking water and wastewater treatment processes and innovative water reuse strategies that are part of projects within the JH/Stantec Alliance. Stantec is a leader in water and wastewater treatment/design and provider of strategic consulting, environmental engineering and construction services.
The research technologist will work in a highly collaborative environment that includes other research technologists, graduate students and PostDocs.
The applicant will conduct basic and advanced water, wastewater and urine-related analyses of emerging organic contaminants using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry following established procedures or protocols.
The applicant will work on the development of analytical methods for the detection of novel emerging organic contaminants in aqueous matrices.
Assist graduate students and post-doctoral fellows with the conduct of water and wastwater-related experiments and testing.
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
Experience with LC-high resolution MS is desired but not mandatory.
Six months of post-undergraduate experience in a comparable laboratory, or a significant independent research project or internship, not related to normal course requirements.
Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience with liquid chromatography mass spectrometry analysis.
The applicant will carry out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision and exchange routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication skills.
The position requires competency in the analysis of organic contaminants in aqueous samples including urine, wastewater and drinking water, in particular in the application of liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).
Knowledge of basic chemistry laboratory techniques.
