Dr. Kellogg Schwab's research group in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering in the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking to hire a highly motivated, full-time, engineering focused research technologist.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Research will include studies on the analysis of water quality parameters focusing on COVID-19 response.
Under the general supervision of the faculty investigator, the applicant will be responsible for performing chemical and microbial analysis focusing on emerging contaminants in aqueous matrices including drinking water and wastewater. The work includes the use of established procedures and protocols and the development of new analytical methods for various aqueous matrices.
Research will further include studies on improved drinking water and wastewater treatment processes and innovative water reuse strategies that are part of projects within the JHU/Stantec Alliance. Stantec is a leader in water and wastewater treatment/design and provider of strategic consulting, environmental engineering and construction services.
The research technologist will work in a highly collaborative environment that includes other research specialists, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
The applicant will conduct basic and advanced water and wastewater analyses of emerging contaminants using chemical analysis techniques as well as microbial techniques for detection of viruses and bacteria following established procedures and protocols.
The applicant will work on the development of analytical methods for the detection of novel emerging constituents of interest in aqueous matrices.
Assist graduate students and post-doctoral fellows with the conduct of water and wastwater-related experiments and testing.
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in environmental health and engineering.
Some relatedpost-undergraduate experience in a comparable laboratory, or a significant independent research project or internship, not related to normal course requirements.
Six (6) months of related experience preferred.
Experience with Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), total nitrogen, Total Solids (TS) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) is desired but not mandatory.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The applicant will carry out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision and exchange routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of basic chemistry laboratory techniques.
